Every year, the Medical Specialist Group organises two ‘Taste of Medicine’ weeks, during the schools’ work experience weeks, whereby sixth form students from Guernsey’s schools have the opportunity to experience life as a doctor by shadowing a number of different specialists. They have the opportunity to attend clinics, shadow ward rounds and attend theatres to observe either the anaesthetists or the surgeons. They also have the opportunity to talk to doctors form many different specialities and build relationships that hopefully will support them through their time applying to medical schools. We also take students who are keen to pursue professions allied to medicine so they can also gain some insight into their preferred career.
The application form to join the Taste of Medicine week will be shared with students towards the end of the autumn term in the year before they are likely to apply to read medicine through UCAS.
