Dr Zhu brings more than two decades of experience in cancer medicine and research. He treats a wide range of cancers including prostate, bladder, kidney, bowel and gynaecological. He has a particular interest in immunotherapy, a rapidly developing field that helps the body's own immune system fight cancer.
He said: “Being able to provide care that helps patients feel safe and through what can be a very challenging time is incredibly important to me”
Dr Michelle Le Cheminant, Chair of MSG, said: “Dr Zhu joins our fantastic Oncology team with Dr Gomes and Dr Manikyam, together they will continue to deliver exceptional patient care to islanders who need it. Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, so his interest and specialist expertise in these cancers will be hugely beneficial to our community.”
Dr Zhu gained his medical degree before completing a PhD in Cancer Immunotherapy at Cancer Research UK in Leeds in 2000. Following more than seven years in research roles specialising in immunology and cancer, he undertook foundation medical training at Oxford.
He went on to combine Core Medical Training with clinical research as an Academic Clinical Fellow and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2012. During his specialist training in oncology, he was selected as a Clinical Studies Group member of the National Cancer Research Institute.
In 2020, Dr Zhu was appointed Consultant Medical Oncologist at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, where he managed bowel and urological cancers, including prostate, kidney and bladder cancers.
Throughout his career, Dr Zhu has remained actively involved in academic and clinical research, publishing in international peer-reviewed journals and presenting at national conferences.
Dr Zhu added: “Guernsey brings a fresh perspective to medical practice and I’m looking forward to working closely with the other consultants to serve this beautiful island and its close-knit community.”
MSG continues to attract world leading specialist expertise to meet the evolving needs of islanders, further strengthening its commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
