"Healing in Tranquillity": A Locum GP's testimony in Guernsey

"Healing in tranquility". That's how GP Dr Muayad Al-Zerje (also known as Dr Mitch) described his experience as a locum with local GP surgery IslandHealth during 2023. He accounts his experience below: 

'In September 2023, I embarked on a professional journey that would redefine my perspective on healthcare and well-being. A two-week Locum GP assignment on Guernsey Island was the catalyst for an unexpectedly transformative experience. Little did I anticipate the profound impact this serene haven would have on my career and personal life. The initial allure of Guernsey lay in its favourable weather and the genuine friendliness of the local people. What began as a short stint evolved into a longer commitment when IslandHealth extended an offer for a three-month winter placement.

'Grateful for the opportunity to delve deeper into the island's unique dynamics, I embraced the chance to truly live and breathe the Guernsey experience. Undoubtedly, living on an island comes with its challenges, and the foremost among them is the cost of accommodation. However, the negatives, including this financial hurdle, were swiftly overshadowed by the multitude of positives that permeated every aspect of my daily life. The working environment emerged as a standout feature, offering a rare gem in the medical profession, an authentic work-life balance. The ability to engage in outdoor activities became a cherished routine.

'Guernsey's natural beauty, from its rugged cliffs to pristine beaches, served as both a playground and a therapeutic escape. Beyond the confines of the clinic, I found myself embracing a holistic approach to well-being, nourishing both body and soul amidst the island's breath-taking landscapes. One of the most rewarding aspects of my Guernsey experience was the warm reception from the patients. Their friendliness and welcoming demeanour created a unique doctor-patient relationship that went beyond the clinical setting. It was heartening to witness a community where healthcare was not just a service but a collaborative effort, forging bonds that transcended the traditional doctor-patient dynamic. Becoming an integral part of the healthcare team at IslandHealth was surprisingly seamless. Colleagues proved to be not just co-workers but a supportive community, easing the initial nervousness that accompanied my foray into this new role.

'The camaraderie within Island Health cultivated an environment where every team member felt valued and encouraged. Reflecting on my journey, the decision to take on the role of a Locum GP in Guernsey stands out as one without regrets. It has been, without a doubt, the best experience of my career. I wholeheartedly recommend this unique opportunity to any doctor seeking respite from the demanding and stressful NHS environment. Guernsey not only offers a professional haven but also the chance to live and thrive in a welcoming and breathtakingly beautiful island, a sanctuary for both career and soul.'
