Guernsey woman Dr Ruth Copeland has joined the Medical Specialist Group as a consultant physician specialising in geriatric medicine.
Dr Copeland first developed her interest in geriatric medicine while working as a healthcare assistant at the PEH in Guernsey when she was a student. She explains, ‘I then worked with many inspiring geriatricians during my early years in training and became a passionate advocate for providing high quality healthcare to older people.
‘I really enjoy the challenge of caring for older patients who have complex multimorbidity, meaning they are living with at least two long-term health conditions. I get a lot of job satisfaction from working collaboratively with patients and their families to find a pragmatic approach to treating their long term health issues.’
Dr Copeland grew up in Guernsey, attending the Grammar School before undertaking her medical training at the University of Nottingham Medical School, graduating in 2010. Her postgraduate training was in the East Midlands and she was then appointed as a consultant geriatrician at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, one of England’s largest teaching hospitals.
Outside work she enjoys spending time with her husband and three small children and says, ‘Now that we have returned to Guernsey I am looking forward to reconnecting with friends and family and experiencing all that Guernsey has to offer.’
Her mother, Rachel Copeland BEM, is well known locally as a former health visitor and as the founder of the children’s charity Bright Beginnings.
Dr Tom Saunders, chair of the medical directorate, says of Dr Copeland’s appointment, ‘I am delighted to welcome Ruth to the MSG. With her experience in geriatric medicine and her commitment to putting the patient first, she will make an excellent addition to our team.’
