Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Hilary Holland has retired from the Medical Specialist Group after almost 20 years and plans to spend part of her retirement fulfilling a lifelong dream of working in a tea shop

Dr Holland joined the MSG in 2004 from Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon where she was Clinical Director for Theatre and Critical Care services. She originally graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 1983 and, after post-graduate training in anaesthesia and intensive care, worked in several hospitals in the UK, where she developed special interests in anaesthesia for maternity patients and eye surgery patients.

She said, ‘It has been a great privilege to live in the beautiful island of Guernsey, to work with the wonderful people who make up the MSG - doctors, nurses, management and admin staff - and to serve the people of the island over the past 18 years. I would like to thank the MSG and hospital staff with whom I have worked for making the job such a pleasure.

'I have often expressed an interest in working in a tea shop, and I do think the people skills should transfer pretty well. Keep a look out for me in that setting in the near future!’

MSG chair Gary Yarwood, paid tribute to Dr Holland, saying, ‘Hilary has been a real asset to our anaesthesia team. She’s very competent, not fazed by a challenge and very easy to get along with. A good colleague, she will be properly missed.’

Dr Holland will be replaced by two anaesthetists, a married couple who will job share and who move to the island next month.
